On June 26 and 27 2007, OK Champion participated in the Dig Big 2007 show, held at Planet Underground in Manteno, Illinois. The show’s purpose is “to enhance damage prevention programs, reduce underground utility accidents and to help prevent disaster when accidents occur. Both Dig Big and OK Champion place a high priority on safety in the use of underground utility equipment. The primary focus of the event was the demonstrations of the equipment. They have companies bring in their equipment and demonstrate to attendees the proper techniques on how to safely operate the machinery. Champion brought with them two machines for demonstration, the CP2000 cable puller and the innovative OK990 Rodder Puller (provided by Nesco – www.nescosales.com) along with a Cable Scrapper for display.
The CP2000 is ideal for pulling cable in cases where placing the unit right above a manhole may not be an option. Its compact size increases maneuverability while the pulling frame has the capability of achieving an arc of 180°, thus allowing the machine to reach a manhole behind or to the side of it. Another key feature is the wireless remote, which allows the operator to move around as necessary and even to operate within the manhole. The CP2000 is a great machine for companies looking for a simple procedure to solve their cable pulling needs.
The OK990 goes a step further than the CP2000 and enables rodding and placing to be done in a single operation. First, a spring steel rod goes through the conduit to clean, then the rod itself is able to pull the cable back through. The OK990 is an important machine for the history of OK Champion, which is evident as Paul Knoerzer explains the history. Champion originally used rodders in the 1960’s as sewer cleaners, and by 1970 had applied this technology toward the needs of the phone and power companies. They pioneered the concept of having a rod to pull the cable. The guide set on the machine allows cable to be pulled up through the manhole so that the user can pull as much as needed in order to splice it with another piece at the manhole. This guide set facilitates the process, so that less manual work is required. Champion had manufactured this machine for Nesco, who provided the truck for demonstration purposes at the show.
OK Champion’s Cable Scrapper provides a high production method for reclaiming valuable duct space, removing old, out-of-date cable, and scrapping valuable metals from cables. Rather than using older practices consisting of manual labor that can be both time consuming and physically exhausting, the cable scrapper backs directly up to the manhole, removes the cable, and scraps it directly into a dumpster. The old cable can then be recycled to finance future operations. The scrapper combines a pulling force of 25000 pounds with a pulling speed of 90 feet per minute. The machine is able to perform both cable pulling and cutting functions and features a pulling frame that extends down a maximum of 32 feet (practically eliminating all manhole rigging). The cable scrapper offers both simplicity and flexibility and provides easy and effective access to some of the most challenging conduit environments.
